Color or Single-sided Printing for a Document

The default settings for all faculty and staff printing is mono and double-sided. If you want to print in color and/or one-sided, please do the following:

  1. If in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc., click File and then click Print. For other programs, you can also display the dialog box by simply pressing Ctrl+P.
  2. Using the Name drop-down list, select the printer you want to use.
  3. Click on the Printer Properties link under the name of the printer. The exact appearance of the dialog box, and the controls it contains, depends on the printer. For the HP printers, the settings are under Finishing (print on both sides) and Color (print in grayscale). For the copiers, it’s on the Layout tab (print on both sides).
  4. Click on OK to close the Properties dialog box.
  5. Click on OK from the Print dialog box. Your document will be printed.

Getting to Printers in Windows 10

  • In the search box at the bottom left, type printer and press Enter
  • Select Printers and scanners

When you are in the printer section, you can do the following:

Add a Printer

  • Click Add a printer or scanner.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the very long list of University printers
  • Click The printer that I want isn’t listed
  • On the Find Printers screen, click Select a shared printer by name and type
    \\B7W-printsrv.ad.psu.edu\  NOTE: You will need to type this whole name including the ending \  A list of printers will appear.
  • Find the printer on the list, click on it, and then click Next
  • When the printer is finished installing, click Next
  • On the Default Printer screen, check the box if this printer is the one you will use the most and click Finish.

Set a Default Printer

  • Select the printer you want to be your default
  • Click Manage and then select Set as default.

Delete a Printer

  • Click once on the printer to be deleted
  • Click the Remove device button.

Student Printing – Paw Prints

PAWPrints Station

The student printing system at Penn State University is called Paw Prints. This system includes:

  • Print from a personal device, the cloud (OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.), USB drive, a web browser, Canvas.
  • Print in color and mono
  • Letter and tabloid paper sizes

The Berks campus has six Paw Prints kiosks that are located in:

  • Franco Lobby near the Bursar
  • Gaige Lobby
  • Luerssen Hallway near the faculty office suite 101
  • Perkins Student Center and Beaver Athletics and Wellness Center near the Creekside Market
  • Thun Library across from the I.T. Help Desk
  • Bowman Lounge

Please note these are the only printers available to students on the Berks campus.

Buying a Personal Computer

Software

Anti-virus Protection

As of August 2020, the University will no longer have a contract with Symantec Endpoint Protection. Windows 10 users should use the built-in Windows Defender and Mac users should visit Office of Information Security (OIS) anti-virus for a list of free anti-virus packages. Anyone who downloaded Symantec onto a personal device through the University will be required to remove it.

Hardware

The University’s Connect to Tech guide offers the minimum hardware recommendations for student technology needs. This guide also lists many useful technology resources.

Warranty

When purchasing a computer, please carefully consider the warranty. A laptop, due to it’s mobile nature, may need a better warranty than a desktop. Questions to consider:

  • How long of a warranty is needed?
  • What is the process to have warranty repair work completed?
  • Are accidents covered?
